At the end of 2001, there were more than 6,000 Wendy's restaurants around the world; about 5,300 of these were located in the United States with the balance located in 26 other countries and territories.

Spicy Chicken Sandwich

Wendy's Copycat Recipe

Makes 4 sandwiches

6-8 cups vegetable oil
1/3 cup Frank’s Original Red Hot Pepper Sauce
2/3 cup water
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 1/2 teaspoons salt
4 teaspoons cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon coarse ground black pepper
1 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
4 chicken breast fillets
4 plain hamburger buns
8 teaspoons mayonnaise
4 lettuce leaves
4 tomato slices

Preheat 6-8 cups of oil in a deep fryer to 350 degrees. Combine the pepper sauce and water in a small bowl. Combine the flour, salt, cayenne pepper, black pepper, onion powder, paprika and garlic powder in another shallow bowl.

Pound each of the chicken pieces with a mallet until about 3/8 inch thick. Trim each breast fillet if necessary to help it fit on the bun. Working with one fillet at a time, coat each piece with the flour, then dredge it in the diluted pepper sauce. Coat the chicken once again in the flour mixture and set it aside until the rest of the chicken is breaded.

Fry the chicken fillets for 8-12 minutes or until they are light brown and crispy. Remove the chicken to a rack or to paper towels to drain. As chicken is frying, prepare each sandwich by grilling the face of the hamburger buns on a hot skillet over medium heat.

Spread about 2 teaspoons of mayonnaise on the face of each of the inverted top buns. Place a tomato slice onto the mayonnaise, then stack a leaf of lettuce on top of the tomato. On each of the bottom buns, stack one piece of chicken. Flip the top half of each sandwich onto the bottom half and serve hot.

Tuscan Chicken

Wendy’s New Item

Tuscan Chicken on Ciabatta, breaded chicken, garlic and roasted tomato aïoli, nine leaf spring mix, asiago cheese and sliced tomatoes on a ciabatta bun, $4.69

Mediterranean Cheeseburger

This burger had Mediterranean  inspired ingredients, like tangy, creamy rosemary garlic aioli and sweet, mildly tart, roasted chopped tomatoes. The tomatoes and spring mix made from nine different greens give a burst of cool freshness against melty, aged Asiago cheese and a hot quarter pound patty of fresh beef.  Applewood Smoked bacon gave the cheeseburger extra crunch, and toasted authentic ciabatta bread made the perfect bun for these complex, rich flavors.

Wendy’s new ciabatta bun had a light, airy texture and a thin, delicate crust. It was produced on an artisan line and is sliced and baked, meaning no two ciabatta buns were exactly the same.

Was available for a limited time only, the Ciabatta Bacon Cheeseburger had a recommended price of $4.79.  Prices varied by market.

Strawberry Lemonade

Wendy's Copycat Recipe

Makes 6 Drinks

zest of 1 lemon, in wide strips
2 cups sugar
2 cups chopped hulled strawberries
2 cups fresh lemon juice (from about 10 large lemons)
1/4 teaspoon salt

Make the lemon syrup: Bring the lemon zest, 1 1/2 cups sugar and 1 1/2 cups water to a boil in a medium saucepan, stirring, until the sugar dissolves; let cool to room temperature.

Meanwhile, make the strawberry syrup: Toss the strawberries and the remaining 1/2 cup sugar in a bowl and let sit at room temperature until the sugar dissolves, about 45 minutes. Strain the strawberry mixture; reserve the strawberry syrup and berries separately.

Make the lemonade: Combine the lemon juice, lemon syrup, salt and 2 cups cold water in a pitcher. For each drink, put about 1 tablespoon of the strawberry syrup in a tall glass. Fill with ice, then top with the lemonade and some of the reserved strawberries.

$5 Late Night Combo

Wendy's is looking to spur some late night visits with a promotional combo that's only available after 10pm, since most Wendy's restaurants are now open till midnight or later. Wendy’s Moonlight Meal Deal was designed to meet these needs. The Moonlight Meal Deal includes a Double Stack hamburger, Chili Cheese Fries, and a large soft drink all for $5 after 10 pm.

The Double Stack starts with two junior hamburger patties, topped off with American cheese, ketchup, mustard, pickle, and onion.

The Chili Cheese Fries combine Wendy’s natural-cut fries with sea salt, with slow-cooked and meaty chili and a cheesy Cheddar sauce.

The move comes as rival McDonald's has recently been toying with offering "Breakfast After Midnight" and chains like Jack in the Box and Taco Bell have traditionally played up their open late night reputation.

Flatbread Chicken Sandwiches

The latest food from Wendy's comes in the form of new, limited-time Flatbread Grilled Chicken Sandwiches. The new entree comes in two varieties: Asiago Ranch and Smoky Honey Mustard. The sandwiches are only available through late May 2013.

The Asiago Ranch Flatbread comes with grilled chicken breast strips, spring mix, tomatoes, natural Asiago cheese, applewood-smoked bacon, and creamy Asiago ranch sauce, folded in a five-grain toasted flatbread.

The Smoky Honey Mustard features sliced grilled chicken breast, a spring mix of leafy greens, tomatoes, and smokey honey mustard sauce, wrapped in a five-grain toasted flatbread.

The new sandwiches come just in time to compete with McDonald's new McWraps. They both feature similar concepts that look to appeal to healthier eaters, at similar price points. Between the two, flatbread seems slightly more novel than tortillas. And, of course, there's also the flatbread option at Subway.

The only differences between the Smoky Honey Mustard version and the Asiago Ranch flatbread sandwich arethe different sauces and that the Asiago Ranch has bacon and cheese in it.

These are so easy to make at home since flatbread is readily available in supermarkets and well as grilled chicken breast strips. Use the appropriate salad dressing for the sauce on your copycat Wendy's Flatbread Sandwich.
